I need help with using my curling tongs!?

Ive just started using curling tongs, ive looked up loads of different instructions but they all say the same things so I followed those but all I end up with is a frizzy ball with some curls on the bottom. I normally straighten it and thats fine I just really want to curl it becuase sometimes it curls naturally and it looks good. Can anybody tell me step-by-step how to use them so I dont get frizz?? (I use a John Frieda frizz-fighter for curls and Aussie heat protect spray)
