From brunette to blonde?

I have brunette hair it has some lighter natural redish and blonde in it but its mostly dark brown. I am going to have a friend dye it for me so I don't miss anything. I was just wondering what products have the best effect and for how long did you keep them in. Also I have used john friedas brunette and red shampoos and conditioner. Would using the blonde help take some brassiness out or lighten it after if needed. Oh and I have green eyes and freckles and can get a mild tan. So what shade should I go and how should I do it?
