How come hair doesn't stay straight when I straighten it?

I naturally have thick, curly/wavy hair, and every time I leave the house with it straightened, it's pin straight, but when I get to school, it get wavy! I use a John Frieda straightening cream before I flat iron my hair, but it doesn't work! How can I get my hair to stay straight?
