How to keep CURLY hair smooth during humid weather?

Okay so I live in Louisiana, on the river...yea so it's BEYOND humid here. I prefer curling my hair over straightening it, but even when I curl it, after I step outside its a big ball of fluffy, almost sticky hair. I put John Frieda Weather Works in it when it's wet, but that doesn't help. I also use shine serum. Is there anyway to prevent the poof without smothering in hairspray? Also any tips for keeping it straight would be appreciated as well. (:
